The acquisition of English reading skills plays a pivotal role in the educational development of primary school students. However, teachers often encounter various challenges when teaching reading skills to young learners, especially at the mountainous area. This study aims to identify the difficulties faced by mountainous primary school teachers in teaching English reading skills and propose effective solutions to address these challenges. The research methodology involved a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and surveys conducted with primary school teachers and students. The study sample consisted of students and teachers from primary school. The findings revealed several significant difficulties encountered by mountainous primary school teachers in teaching English reading skills. These difficulties included limited vocabulary and reading comprehension abilities, remote locations, insufficient instructional resources, language barriers, students' lack of interest and motivation, and difficulties in catering to individual learning needs. To address these challenges, various solutions were identified. Firstly, a balanced and systematic approach to reading instruction was recommended, encompassing phonics, vocabulary development, comprehension strategies, and fluency practice. Additionally, the importance of providing ample opportunities for reading in different contexts, such as through read-aloud sessions, guided reading, and independent reading, was emphasized. The study also stressed the significance of incorporating interactive and technology-enhanced activities to enhance student engagement and motivation.
